Welcome to the home of Prabhas Pokharel.
A text bio, of sorts:
- I am interested in the intersection of Techonology (ICTs to be specific--Information and Communication Technologies) and social Development.
- I work in Columbia University at the Modi Research Group within the Earth Institute. We work with making data-based systems in the developing world better; we use mobile phones, maps, and the web a lot. Best (?) of all, we are totally open source .
- I spent the summer of 2011 in Nepal, working with the Nepal ko Yuwa movement (more on Facebook), and re-introducing myself to Nepal. I hung out with youth techies, activists, and entrepreneurs there, and gave a TEDxKathmandu talk, which sadly hasn't produced a video yet.
- I also used to work at UNICEF Kosovo, and helped found and run an Innovations Lab there. I blog about that work at my "Adventures in Innovation" blog. No one has told me the title is obnoxious yet, which surprises me. The Innovation Lab now has a life above and beyond what I helped start, and can be found at kosovoinnovation.org and Facebook
- I used to work at this awesome placed called MobileActive.org. I worked mainly on research and writing for the Mobile Media Toolkit there, but also got to hang out with amazing people in the ICTD landscape, and got a really cool "evange-realist" perspective to the field that I will cherish for quite a while. You can see what I wrote while I was at MobileActive.org on this page.
- In what seems now like the way back when, I used to study Computer Science at Harvard University. I liked Data Structures and Algorithms, and Programming Languages a lot, and loved the multidisciplinary peer group I had. I was also lucky to be taught by awesome people like Amy Smith, Esther Duflo, and Chris Csikszentmihalyi at MIT.
