Nepali Paper & Dhaka

Posted on Sep 14, 2015

As I was working on my project for the Yantra Art / Science exhibit last year, the Karkhana.asia folks challenged me to create an abstract visualizations that evokes traditional Nepali art. The challenge was to connect technology (= modern) with traditional art and handicraft (= the ancient). I chose to create a visualization that referenced the objects depicted in the physical Mane, slowly revealed in Dhaka. Of course, there weren’t good images of Dhaka I could find online; I had to go to New Road and photograph Dhaka prints so that I could use them. I tried to find good quality images of Nepali paper, and again, I found it hard.

So I just put up a new github repository called ali khasro (अली खस्रो, a little rough) where I have put up some images that I took. I’m hoping people will contribute more, and that there will be lots of fun projects they will be used in. If you do, feel free to email me. And while I’m at it, I also turned the background texture of this site to one based on one of the papers. What do you think? Let me know on twitter or fb!

See a few samples below, and get them on github.
